After climbing up Mt.Wilson a few times on my fixed I finally feel comfortable on posting a “how to” guide in completing the course. To start off, your climbing a mountain so expect your cadence being very slow for a good while. Another thing is to stretch before you attempt the climb because since your on a fixed gear you wont have the privilege of coasting when riding down the mountain. Lastly, pack a lot of water and energy bars because you will be hungry after the climb. These tips will help prevent cramps and I suggest following them because this is no easy feat.
When you make your way towards the entrance on Angeles Crest Hwy don’t be fool by how the the first mile or two seem a bit unbearable. Once you pass that first obstacle the road starts to become a gradual climb. There will be two areas for water one is the fire department which is a quarter of the way up and the final water spot is at the Red Box which is near the end of Mt. Wilson. Manage your water supply and energy because you can over heat if you over do the climbing. Breathing from your nose is also a good way to regulate your heat so focus on nasal breathing while maintaining a consistent stride. I suggest doing wilson in the morning during the times of 8-10am you should already be by angeles crest hwy, since there is little to no traffic around that time. You should always be aware though sometimes drivers enjoy speeding.
The whole ride should be around 7 thousand feet in elevation. Angeles Crest Hwy will have two descents when climbing so use that time to give your legs a rest with some spinning. Make use of the high elevation by taking deep breaths. The higher the altitude the more red blood cells will be accumulated hence giving you a higher amount of red blood cells.In theory, The increase of red blood cells will give you an advantage when cycling at sea level. High altitude training does have its cons, from what I’ve read Headaches, and some altitude sickness may happen. Both things I haven’t experienced. I did get a cramp by the end of my ride, I hate cramps.
The view is amazing, on one hand it makes you feel so small but on the other so powerful. I hope you guys and gals have the same experience I’ve been having.
